What goes into a new concrete floor in Durango?
Concrete floor installation in Durango means preparing the ground, placing the concrete, then finishing, jointing and curing it into a hard surface that stands up to wear in a basement, shop, addition or other inside space. Done right, it wears hard and even instead of dusting or flaking.
Most people who call about a floor have bare dirt, a cracked old slab or a floor that sheds dust every time they sweep. The price mostly follows the floor's size and thickness, how much has to come out first and what goes under and on top of it, and the schedule follows the permit, the ground and the weather. We check what the city needs before anyone digs, and if it's a garage you're pouring, our garage floor concrete page covers that job. The estimate is where you get the figure for your own floor.
How we handle concrete floor installation
We start with the subgrade, the dirt the floor sits on, digging out anything soft and packing a firm base, because a floor raked level over loose ground settles right along with it. If you plan to tile, coat or carpet the floor, tell us early, because coverings and coatings get the most protection when the moisture barrier sits right against the underside of the slab, and that's where we'll put it. Where the floor calls for rebar, the steel that holds the slab together if it does crack, it goes in next, and then we pour. On an inside floor the timing of the finishing, the control joints and the cure is the whole job, so I'm there to call each step. Control joints are shallow cuts that give the concrete a place to crack where we chose, and curing is keeping the new floor damp and covered while it gains strength, before you put weight on it.
The same crew pours the outside work too. If your project takes in a pool, we build concrete pool decks with a surface that suits wet, bare feet, and when a new floor sits below a door, we can add concrete steps so the way in is solid and even.
What changes concrete floor installation in Durango
Inside Durango city limits, a building permit has to be in hand before any work or ground disturbance starts, and the city's Building Division is the office that issues it. Whether your floor needs one is something we check before we dig, and when it does, we handle the application and build the review into your schedule. We'd also want to know if your house is in Sky Ridge or Rock Ridge, because the city requires professionally engineered foundation systems in both subdivisions, so we look at what the engineer laid out before planning a floor that sits on it.
A lot of the floors we pour on jobs around Durango go into basements, additions and shops where the concrete has to come in through a door or a tight side yard, so access often shapes how we plan the pour. We're based here and work in the cities around it too.

What happens when you call Durango Concrete Company in Durango
Call or send the form
Call (970) 844-8095 or send the form with a few lines about the floor. We'll set a time for me to come out and see it.
I walk the job myself
I look at the ground, the access and what's there now, and listen to what you want the floor to do. You get a plain account of what we'd do and an estimate built from your floor's size, base work and finish, so the price isn't a guess.
We sort out the permit
Before anyone digs, we sort out what the city or county needs, and when a permit is needed we apply for it. The city asks for at least 30 business days to review submittals, so your pour date comes after that review.
I run the pour and cleanup
Our crew does the work, and I'm on site running it through the pour, the finishing and the cleanup. Before we leave, I tell you how long to stay off the floor while it cures.
Why Durango homeowners call Durango Concrete Company for concrete floor installation
The owner on every floor
I look at every job myself, and I'm on site running the crew through the pour. The right moment to finish a floor or cut its joints doesn't wait for a phone call, so the person who decides is standing there.
Time spent on the base
The base is buried by the end of the first day, which is why it's the first thing a tight budget tends to cut. I'd rather trim the finish than the base, because a nice top on soft ground still cracks and settles.
Licensed and insured for your job
We're licensed and insured. The City of Durango also requires every contractor to hold a valid city business license, so it's fair to ask anyone who bids your floor to show theirs.
Careful in lived-in homes
We've been in business since 2023, and most of our work happens around houses where kids, cars and gardens are all still there. We keep the work contained and the yard usable, so your household keeps running while the floor goes in.
If a new floor is on your list, send us the details and I'll come take a look.

Questions about concrete floor installation in Durango
How much does it cost to install a concrete floor in Durango?
The cost comes down to your floor's size and thickness, what has to come out before we pour, and how much base work the ground needs. A moisture barrier, rebar and a polished or coated finish add to it, while a plain finish over ground that's already firm keeps it down. I give you the figure for your floor at the estimate.
Will my new concrete floor crack?
Some cracking and some curling at the edges should be expected in any concrete floor, and it's a normal part of how concrete behaves, not a sign something failed. The control joints we cut give most of those cracks a place to go, and every job comes with satisfaction guaranteed on every job, so I'd rather tell you that up front than promise a floor that never cracks.
Can a concrete floor be poured in cold weather?
It can, as long as the ground under it is warm enough. A Michigan concrete trade group's cold-weather guide says the ground must be at least 40°F and within 20°F of the concrete's own temperature, so a cold-season pour starts with knowing the ground temperature. It's a fair thing to ask any crew how they'll check it first.
Does the soil under my house matter for a new concrete floor?
Yes, because the Colorado Geological Survey says building in known expansive soil areas without allowing for the ground to move is a very common source of property damage. Water left ponding near the slab during and after the work, and clay left to dry out too much before the pour, both add to the problem, so we keep water headed away from the floor and don't leave the ground sitting open. The survey also says only a competent soil engineer and engineering geologist should be relied on to say whether soil is expansive, so ask whether one has looked at your site.
What causes a concrete floor to dust or flake?
Usually it's timing, because finishing, jointing or curing done too early or too late can leave a floor that cracks, dusts, scales, or ends up with high and low spots and poor drainage. Pouring in midday heat can weaken the top layer the same way. Ask any crew how it schedules those steps, and I'll walk you through ours.
How long before I can walk on a new concrete floor?
Not until the cure has had time to work, and I'll give you the wait for your floor before we pour, because it depends on the mix, the thickness and how warm the space stays. Furniture and coverings wait longer than feet, since tile or a coating laid too soon can trap moisture the slab is still giving off.
Other concrete work around your house
Concrete pool decks
If a pool's part of your plans, a deck poured with the right texture and slope gives wet feet better grip and sends splash water away from the house.
Concrete steps construction
Worn or crumbling steps at a door can be poured new in concrete, sized so each rise feels the same and the landing sits level with the threshold.
